Introduction:

Importance of Karna Purana:

The Panchakarma procedure of administering clarified butter (ghee) or medicated oil in the ears is called Karna Purana. This Ayurvedic procedure is mainly recommended for ear diseases including swimmer’s ear, hearing loss, tinnitus, Meniere’s disease (characterized by main vertigo), and other diseases related to the ears.

Method or Procedure of Karan Purana:

The below-mentioned steps are followed in Karna Purana Therapy:

  1. First of all, do a head massage of the patient for about 20 to 30 minutes before the procedure of Karna Purana. For head massage, Brahmi oil can be used as it provides brilliant results. Head massage ensures efficient absorption of nutrients to the brain region.
  2. Then ask the patient to lie down in the side-ways parallel position (lateral position).
  3. As per the prescribed oils and ghee, pour a few drops of medicated lukewarm oil/ghee into the affected area and let the patient stay for about 20-30 minutes in the lateral position, and ask the patient to take a rest for half an hour after this procedure. The same process of Karan Purana is repeated for the other ear. After the completion of Karan Purana, light and slow massage should be given to the outer ear region.

For desired and better results, the Karan Purana procedure should be followed continuously for about a week.

Dosage of Karna Purana Oils:

About 5-15 drops of medicated oils are poured into the ears during Karna Purana therapy, rest varies from patient to patient.

Contraindications of Karna Purana:

The therapy of Karna Purana is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Ear wounds
  • If there is any cut in the skin of the ears
  • Due to any reason, if there is a rupture in the eardrum
  • Any kind of ear injury
