Ayurvedic treatment of jaundice

Ayurvedic treatment of Jaundice:

Introduction:

Jaundice is the most common liver disorder affecting almost all people at some point of time in their life. Icterus is a medical term for jaundice and is mainly caused by the buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow-colored substance that is produced by the breakdown of red blood cells. The normal serum levels of bilirubin are less than 1mg/dl.

Types of Jaundice:

  • Neonatal Jaundice: Jaundice developed in newborn babies is known as Neonatal jaundice. It occurs as a result of the liver being undeveloped.
  • Hepatocellular Jaundice: It is the most common type and occurs when bilirubin is unable to leave the liver cells and cannot be removed from the body by kidneys. It is usually caused by liver disease, hepatitis, liver failure.
  • Haemolytic Jaundice: Haemolytic jaundice occurs when there is too much bilirubin and a large number of red blood cells being broken down. This condition can be due to a problem with the metabolism, or a health condition such as anemia.
  • Obstructive Jaundice: Jaundice occurs when there is an obstruction in the bile duct that prevents bilirubin from leaving the liver.

Causes of Jaundice:

Jaundice can be an onset of any problem in the production of bilirubin. It mainly takes place when the bilirubin is not metabolized by the liver properly. The main causes of jaundice are:

  • Destruction of red blood cells
  • History of Liver Cirrhosis
  • Excess consumption of alcohol and other carbonated drinks
  • History of gall stones
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Alcoholic liver disease
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Due to certain viral infections
  • Circulation of excessive bile in the blood
  • Impairment of the liver function
  • Obstruction in the bile duct

Symptoms of Jaundice:

In a person with jaundice, signs & symptoms may or may not be apparent. In short-term jaundice, which is usually triggered by an infection, the symptoms are:

  • Abdominal Pain                                                                                            Symptoms of jaundice

Ayurvedic concept of Jaundice:

In Ayurveda, Jaundice is termed as ‘Kamala’ and is mainly caused by the aggravation of Pitta dosha. When the liver starts producing bile in excess, the functioning of the liver becomes dysfunctional and it results in jaundice. Jaundice is a typical condition of aggravated or increased pitta, which has affected the gall bladder and liver. With increases in pitta, the biliary secretion can increase excessively and result in various symptoms.

Causes of Jaundice according to Ayurveda:

Paandu rogee tu yo atyarthama pittalaani nishevate

Tasya asruk maamsam dagdhwaa rogaaya kalpate

(Ref – Charaka Chikitsaa 16/34)

When the patient is suffering from pandu, during the process of recovery or after getting cured, if the patient consumes pitta aggravating foods and life activities in excess, it progressively aggravated the pitta and burns the muscles. Further, this leads to Jaundice.
