Ayurvedic Treatment of Varicose Vein

Ayurvedic treatment of varicose vein

Introduction:

Varicose veins are defined as large, twisted, and enlarged veins that most commonly affect the veins in the legs. Any vein that is close to the skin’s surface can become varicose. The veins usually located on the inside of the thigh or calf develops due to weakness of the vein wall and loss of valve function. This condition is a common health complaint in people like soldiers, drivers, teachers, security guards, etc.

Causes and Risk Factors of Varicose Veins:

Varicose veins mainly developed when veins are not functioning as they normally should and it results that blood begins pooling in the vein.
Generally, all of our veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from backward flowing. The valves push blood forward and keep it running through the vein properly. But due to any of the reasons, when vein valves malfunction, however, blood begins to collect in the vein, it begins straining against the walls of the vein, resulting in a twisted bulging appearance that we can associate with Varicose veins.

Following are some causative factors for the development of varicose veins:

  • Having a family history of varicose veins: If one of the family members had varicose veins, there are greater chances of developing the varicose veins.
  • Being female: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins due to hormonal changes.
  • Overweight: Being overweight puts added pressure on veins and thus results in developing varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, there is an increase in blood volume and can also enlarge the veins in the legs.
  • Sitting or Standing for long periods
  • Taking oral contraceptive pills regularly
  • Injury in the legs
  • Postmenopausal hormonal replacement
  • A history of blood clots

Varicose Vein in Ayurveda:

In Ayurveda, Varicose veins are termed as ‘Siraja grathi’, in which the blood veins are enlarged, fibrosis, and become tortuous. Due to long-standing, long walk, weight-bearing, excess fatigue, the vein in the lower limb especially in the calf and ankle loses its elasticity and are re-sending the blood upwards. Due to this, the veins are dilated, swollen, lose their ability to shrink and this condition results in developing varicose veins.

Causes of Varicose Vein according to Ayurveda:

According to Ayurveda, the following are the main causes that result in developing varicose veins:

  • Excess intake of abhishiyandi foods (heavy and nonveg food)
  • Shramatiyog (excessive work)
  • Adwagamana (long walk)
  • Excessive intake of guru, snigdha, manda food kinds of stuff (heavy, unctuous, mild)

Symptoms of Varicose Vein according to Ayurveda:

Varicose veins are often accompanied by the following symptoms:

Ayasa (fatigue), Gratitha sira (distended veins), Sada (numbness), Krishnarakta sira (blue to purple discoloration in the skin), and Toda (aching in the lower legs).

Pathophysiology of Varicose Vein according to Ayurveda:

Due to the above-mentioned reasons, when there is an increase in Ruksha guna (dryness) of Vayu (air) and the subtle tissue metabolism, the valves in the vein become weaker as they lose elasticity. Because blood vessels are involved, there is an involvement of Pitta dosha. Along with aggravated Vata dosha, pitta and kapha are vitiated in weight-bearing areas like ankle and calf. Ultimately, the imbalanced doshas disturb the vessels and blood of that particular area. Thus due to obstruction of the pathway of the blood vessels, the blood is stagnated and the veins are dilated in their weak points and thus there is a developing Varicose vein (Siraj grathi).

Ayurvedic Herbs for Varicose Vein:

In Ayurveda, there are several Ayurvedic herbs that help in managing varicose vein and prevents further complications by improving the blood circulation and toning of the vein, the herbs are arjuna, ashwagandha, guduchi, amalaki, erandamool kshaya, punarnashtak kwath, kanchnar guggul, sarivadyasava, chirbilvadi kshayam, etc.
